A Grade-II listed property in Hexham, has opened to the public for the first time as a Northumberland wedding venue with several holiday apartments available exclusively with the UK’s leading self-catering holiday company, cottages.com.

Northumberland County Council in partnership with cottages.com is inviting guests to say “I do” at Hexham House in the recently redeveloped registry office and and enjoy a stay in one of its seven self-catering apartments in top quality surroundings.

Featuring dramatic views over Hexham Abbey, the eighteenth-century building received a £1.5m refurbishment to restore it back to its former glory in 2016. It opened to the public in late 2017 having kept the high ceilings, original wood and doors, decorative mouldings and ceiling cornices to ensure the original character of the building was retained.

Built in 1723 to the north of Hexham Abbey grounds by Thomas Adams, a lecturer at the abbey, the original building consisted of just the middle section with the two wings to either side added at a later date. In 1928, the grounds were opened up to be enjoyed by the public under the care of Hexham Urban District Council.

Guaranteeing that guests staying within the apartments to see the region, or attend a wedding are well catered for and receive a special holiday experience,cottages.com Area Manager for Northumberland, Annabelle Baker has been on hand to offer the council the support that it needs to welcome holidaymakers through its doors for the first time.

Speaking of this exciting addition to the cottages.com portfolio, Annabelle said: “We are delighted to welcome on board Hexham House with its unique apartments, which offer the perfect base to explore Northumberland.

Hexham House is the perfect Northumberland wedding venue

Hexham house“The council has worked tirelessly to update and breathe new life into this listed building while retaining its original character. We are always working to ensure we have wide range of properties on our books that offer something different. With its fantastic opportunity for stargazing and idyllic location, Hexham House certainly does just that.”

Neil Arnold, Chief Information Officer at Northumberland County Council added: “Seeing the redevelopment of Hexham House and the upgrading of facilities has been fantastic to witness. The building was in dire need of repair with water even coming through the roof at one point, but we couldn’t imagine it being anything other than a stunning wedding venue with adjoining accommodation.

“When it came to selecting a partner, cottages.com was our first choice based on their reputation within the market place, and the team has proved invaluable offering advice when needed.

“Since our opening, Hexham House has already proved popular with both couples looking to tie the knot as a Northumberland wedding venue and holidaymakers looking for a unique base where they can explore the beautiful county of Northumberland.”
