Visitors to the Ideal Home Show sponsored by Zoopla*, have voted on their favourite royal wedding cake from 38 towering masterpieces designed in celebration of the forthcoming wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Entries from both professional and amateur cake-makers are displayed at The Ideal Home Show at Olympia, London, with ideas ranging from a ‘whirlwind romance’ typhoon-style concoction to the more conventional multi-layer cake in traditional colours.

Judge Rosie Dummer, better known as Rosie Cake-Diva to her million-plus Facebook fans and watchers of Channel 4’s Extreme Cakes, made the final decision from the top three. An ex-British Forces helicopter pilot herself, Rosie decided on the creation themed ‘When Harry Met Meghan’, by Emma Matthews of Happiness Factor Cakes in Luton, Bedfordshire. A traditional, multi-layered cake measuring 30 inches tall, it depicts the film career of the bride-to-be as well as the Prince’s military training, iced in cream-coloured flowers, film clapperboards and guardsmen.

Emma’s inspiration came from an overdue idea: ‘I’ve had the idea of using guardsmen on a cake for quite some years now, and I’ve gone from cake to cake without using it. When I saw the brief I immediately thought of them, and as it’s the royal wedding I also wanted to incorporate flowers along with Meghan’s career as an actress and their charity work.”

Rosie said: “This cake is beautiful, from every angle, and is charming and personal to the royal couple while still traditional. The attention to detail is exceptional and shows that a cake can still bring a smile while being classical.”

“This has been a really popular display at this year’s show: everyone’s excited about the forthcoming Royal Wedding and this is a way for so many of our visitors to get in the spirit,” said Giles Perry, Show Director of the Ideal Home Show. “We have over a ton of cake and icing on display here at Olympia, with something for everyone’s tastes! We’re also celebrating the couple’s spring marriage with a special tea in our Royal Tearooms: it features all the favourite regal treats from the Queen’s cucumber sandwiches to the Princes’ chocolate biscuit cake.”

Celebrating 110 years, The Ideal Home Show has strong royal connections: HRH Queen Elizabeth has visited the event 11 times.

The runners-up cake designs were ‘Regal Romance’ by DLux Cakes of Kingston, Surrey and ‘A Love Out of Sight’ by Julie Anne Cake Design from Banks, Southport. The prize winners all received their Smeg kitchen equipment prizes on the Ideal Home Show’s Super Stage, presented by Rosie.

The Ideal Home Show 2018, with free entry to the co-located Eat & Drink Festival, runs until the 2 April, and is open from 10:00 to 17:00 Monday to Wednesday, 10:00 to 21:00 on Thursday and 10:00 to 18:00 Friday to Sunday.
