Christie Buet tells Vow's and Venues all about her magnificent destination wedding on the beautiful island of Mallorca located off the east coast of mainland Spain.

From the very moment we got engaged we knew we wanted a destination wedding. Gary and I both wanted our wedding day to represent who we were and what our relationship symbolised. We wanted our love of travel and our desire to embrace other cultures to shine through and it really set the tone for what was truly the best day of our lives. The feeling of being married somewhere so unbelievably beautiful and picturesque can’t be described, but it truly added a completely extra layer of magic and gratitude to our wedding day.

A magical destination wedding in the sun.

Destination wedding MallorcaOn Thursday, 7 September, 2017 I married my everything. 14 years together, Gary and I met when we were just 17 years old and finally decided to tie the knot on the beautiful island of Mallorca. We chose the gorgeous Finca Son Bosch, a rustic Spanish venue which is over 700 years old, surrounded by beautiful scenery – vibrant coloured flowers set against the Tramuntana Mountains.

Gary and I have always loved to travel having visited many countries together on holidays and during a gap year adventure. We also lived overseas in Australia for a few years so we knew a destination wedding was exactly what we wanted. We chose Mallorca due to Gary’s family ties but also its close proximity to the UK meaning all our guests could easily travel and for a fairly reasonable cost.

We visited Mallorca a year prior to the date we set for the wedding to take a look around the venues. There were so many gorgeous places to choose from. We were actually a little over whelmed at where to start but once we decided on an area, it was a little easier to narrow down some venues to visit. There were so many options but no matter what venue we looked at we couldn’t get Finca Son Bosch out of our minds, and we just knew in our hearts it was where we were meant to be married.

Real Life Destination weddingThe entire day was all we could have wished for. Don’t get me wrong, a destination wedding comes with its challenges (communicating mainly via email rather than in person can have its frustrations) but generally everything worked out exactly how we dreamt it would do. Typically we did have a little rain during the ceremony which was frustrating as we planned for the entire day to be outdoors. The venue organisers decided the ceremony should take place inside instead of where we had originally planned, but the weather cleared up afterwards in time for us to have alfresco dining and dancing under the stars. In fact, that’s my main piece of advice if you want a destination wedding – make sure you choose somewhere that can offer a good contingency option. We saw a few spectacular venues but their bad weather options were pretty disappointing. You never think it will actually rain when you get married somewhere you expect to be hot and sunny, but it can, and I will be eternally thankful that Finca Son Bosh had the most beautiful indoor as well as outdoor offering.

One of the main benefits of having a destination wedding is how the majority of our guests stayed out in Mallorca with us for almost a week. The celebrations felt extended and we were able to enjoy long family dinners, cocktails with our friends and beach fun with all our nearest and dearest. By the time the wedding day came around we had already spent quality time with all of our guests so on the wedding day itself we could just relax and enjoy everyone’s company rather than worrying about greeting guests and speaking with people we hadn’t seen for a while. The time spent and the memories made together during the wedding week were priceless and we will be eternally grateful for everyone coming together especially for us.
