Nobody said planning a wedding was easy. From bickers about the music playlist to bridesmaid tantrums, it’s safe to say that most weddings have a hiccup or two in the planning stage. Shopping for that exclusive wedding gown can go smoothly for some brides-to-be and less so for others. If you don’t enjoy clothes shopping or simply can’t find a dress you like, bridal gown shopping can quickly escalate into a wedding planning headache.

The good news is there are certain strategies you can adapt to help make bridal gown shopping easier. Let’s take a look.

Don’t leave wedding dress shopping until the last minute

Venues-Wedding-Clock

Now we have to admit if there’s one element of wedding planning that tends to get ticked off the list first, it’s the bride’s dress, for the simple reason that many brides-to-be view buying their wedding dress as one of the most important and exciting aspects of the wedding. That said, some ladies can leave it later than others and if you’re having difficulty finding a dress you love, time can quickly tick on!

The general rule of thumb is to start wedding dress shopping at least six months before the wedding to give you plenty of time to shop around and have any alterations done to the dress if necessary.

Take proper shoes with you when wedding dress shopping

If you’re planning on wearing heels to your wedding make sure you take a pair of a similar height when shopping for a dress or when having a gown properly fitted. Wearing trainers or flats to the fitting won’t give you a realistic idea of the height of the gown and could lead to some nasty surprises on the big day.

Be realistic about your budget

If you’re on a tight budget refrain from going to wedding boutiques and stores that are designed for the rich and famous. Whilst it might be fun trying on dresses with a five figure price tag, reverting back to the ‘real world’ might be a bit of an unwanted comedown!

Be open-minded

You might have had your mind set on a particular style of wedding dress since you were a young girl but shopping with an open-mind won’t do any harm. You never know, seeing how stunning you look when you try on a slinky, slender silk dress might just end years of wanting to get married in a full-bodied, fairy tale gown.

Make sure the wedding gown dictates the bridesmaids’ dresses not vice-versa

Your bridesmaids might have a pretty good idea of what they’d like to wear to the wedding but don’t succumb to any pressure. It’s your big day and your gown should dictate the bridesmaids’ attire. It would therefore make sense to buy the wedding dress before the bridesmaids’ outfits.

Take your time and don’t forget that you can change your mind

You might feel under pressure to buy your wedding dress so you can move onto the next stage of planning the wedding. However, you should remember that your bridal gown isn’t something you should buy on a whim, nor is it something you should feel pressured into buying.

Take your time, shop around, and go for multiple fittings if you have to, after all it’s better to get it right now than feeling uncomfortable on your big day.
