Coffee can help boost both concentration and energy levels, something all budding brides and grooms are most certainly in need of in the build up to their big day. However, did you know that your morning coffee could also help you shed those unwanted pounds? If you are stuck for time and can’t always find a way to make it to the gym due to all your pre wedding commitments or are finding it hard to stick to one particular diet plan to help you lose weight in time for your big day, then this could be the answer you have been looking for. Could your morning coffee really be your saving grace as the wedding countdown begins?
We caught up with leading nutritionist Sarah Flower to share her top 5 reasons why your morning coffee can help you lose weight.
Give your metabolism a boost:
Your daily cup of coffee can help boost your metabolic rate, by stimulating thermogenesis, helping you in turn to burn more fat. Coffee also contains Chlorogenic acid, which helps to slow down the absorption of carbohydrates, as well as stimulating the hormone Epinephrine, which helps to break down fat. Before you start guzzling coffee all day long, the fat burning effect diminishes the more coffee you have and you could become intolerant to its effects, so it is actually better to choose your coffee wisely and drink only a cup or two per day to enjoy all the benefits.
Go Skinny:
Skinny Coffee Club (www.skinnycoffeeclub.com) coffee mixes are a great beverage for anyone who wants to boost their weight loss. They contain a blend of ground coffee, green coffee bean extract, green tea extract, Garcinia Cambogia and Siberian ginseng, all of which work together to help speed up metabolism, reduce appetite and burn more fat. They also contain Siberian ginseng, the ultimate adaptogen herb which also helps balance the adrenals. Drink one caffeinated Skinny Coffee Club coffee in the morning and one decaffeinated in the evening for enhanced results. The evening blend contains spirulina, chlorella and fennel, a wonderful herb which helps combat bloating and other digestive problems.
Improve Performance:
Caffeine has been shown to help improve performance in the gym, especially when it comes to endurance sports or HIIT, which is why so many diet pills and sports nutrition contain elements of caffeine. Caffeine also acts as a stimulant, boosting energy and burning more fat stores. Caffeine also stimulates the central nervous system, which has been said to help make exercise feel less arduous when training.
Bullet Proof Coffee:
Bullet Proof coffee may sound a bit odd, but it is incredibly popular with the low carb/ketogenic community, as well as athletes who want to boost their energy and performance as well as reduce appetite. Bullet proof coffee is also said to help boost your concentration and cognitive skills. To make your own bullet proof coffee, simply blend freshly brewed coffee in a blender with grass-fed butter and coconut or MCT oil.
Reduce Appetite:
Coffee can stimulate thermogenesis (heat and energy) which in turn reduces appetite and need, temporarily, for food. Coffee also contains chlorogenic acid, which helps to slow down the absorption of carbohydrates and supresses our hunger hormone, Ghrelin. This hormone is stimulated by carbohydrates, which sits in our stomach and growling at us to feed it more and more. Carbohydrates also shut off our leptin response – this is the hormone that tells our brain when we are full. By supressing ghrelin and stimulating leptin, we can effectively reduce our appetite. It is also interesting to note that decaffeinated coffee still contains the important Chlorogenic Acid, and therefore could still produce an appetite supressing effect. A word of caution though to coffee lovers who are partial to more than a simple cup of black coffee. Some coffees, such as milky lattes and cappuccinos can contain a huge number of calories and sugars, all of which can contribute to weight gain, as well as increasing our insulin and ghrelin levels. If you are opting for coffee to help lose weight, choose a simple black coffee or one with a dash of milk and avoid sugar and drinks laden with syrup and lots of milk.
