Come rain or shine: how to plan an outdoor wedding

Samantha Richards of pop-up gazebo event specialists Gazeboshop, shares her tips on how couples can ensure their outdoor wedding day lives up to their expectations, no matter the weather.

An outdoor wedding day should always be a day of joy and celebration. The nervous excitement of the parents-in-law, the chance to catch up with old friends and, of course, the joy of declaring your love in front of your nearest and dearest - all of these are reasons to look forward to your big day. And so you should - it’s your day!

However, Mother Nature doesn’t always get the memo. The UK’s changeable weather can turn a perfect outdoor wedding day into a washout in the blink of an eye, literally and metaphorically dampening the whole occasion. With our weather increasingly unpredictable, married couples must learn how to plan an outdoor wedding with rain in mind.

Here are my top tips to help you prepare for the worst to make the most of your outdoor wedding:

White Gazebo perfect for an outdoor weddingGet the right equipment

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail, and never has that been truer than during a wedding. Aside from booking a venue, arranging catering and organising everything else that a wedding day needs, happy couples should ensure their guests can continue to have a good time if the weather takes a turn for the worst.

Waterproof gazebos are a great choice for your wedding day, especially if you’re thinking of having it in the summer. Not only will it provide shade from the sun (assuming Mother Nature did in fact get the memo), it will stop your guests from getting wet should there be a sudden downpour. That way everyone can keep happily drinking and chatting!

Bride with colourful umbrella Get creative

If you’re insistent on having an outdoor wedding, it’s important to find creative ways to keep your guests protected from the elements. Not everyone can fit underneath a gazebo - so how can you keep your guests dry?

Ordering personalised umbrellas and rain ponchos, for example, will be seen as a fun stroke of genius for your guests, who would appreciate the extra preparations made to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable time. They would also make fun and useful mementos for your family and friends!

Volkswagon campervan Get moving

A key part of any wedding is organising transport for the bride and groom, and rightly so - no one wants to be late to their own wedding! However, it wouldn’t be ideal if your guests arrived at the church soaking wet. If that’s a situation you’d like to avoid, offering your guests transport between your venues should be a consideration.

While you could just book taxis, why not organise something more quirky? A fun idea could be to hire a vintage red bus, on which you could serve afternoon tea. If that sounds too quaint, perhaps a campervan is more your style? Whatever you choose, make sure that your transportation is accessible for all your guests. That way everyone can get to the wedding on time!
