Modern weddings are much more flexible than they used to be, so there’s plenty of trends that won’t fall out of fashion any time soon. Statement shoes are one of the newest, but with so many ways to personalise your footwear ready for the big day, how exactly do you get started?

Pick each other’s shoes
If you aren’t sure how to make a statement with your wedding shoes, here’s a simple idea with a lot of meaning behind it: buy shoes for each other. As long as you get the measurements right beforehand, you’ll end up with shoes that represent how your partner feels about the big day – you might even be pleasantly surprised by a pair you normally wouldn’t even acknowledge if you were shopping for yourself!
Add a personal touch to each shoe
Don’t bend over backwards to dress yourself in a style you hate: if you’ve never liked white high-heeled shoes, now’s the perfect time to make that known to the world! Grab some flat shoes, boots, sandals or slippers and get to work on a wedding outfit that you can feel comfortable in. An artist could splash on some random paint colours, a punk lover could glue on some fake straps and spikes: there’s really no limit to how much you could add!
Sneak in some hidden meaning
Turn a regular shoe into an irreplaceable keepsake for you and your loved one! Even something as simple as a name, date or phrase written on the inside sole can be enough to transform your wedding shoes into a lifelong reminder of the love you two share.
If you’re already full up on sentimental mementoes, why not draw a symbol or logo from something you two can bond over? You’ll be able to remind the world that your relationship can embrace (or, perhaps, thrive on) your hobbies, obsessions and interests.
Get different shoes for the ceremony and the party
Some brides already bring spare shoes they can slip into but having two pairs of shoes opens up plenty more opportunities to express yourself!
You could theme them around the different ‘halves’ of the ceremony – start the day with a pair of really pleasant, attractive heeled shoes and finish off the night wearing some rough, tough working boots or well-worn trainers. This’d be a great way to show your friends and guests that you’re still the same party animal you’ve always been!
Pick out a pattern and some colours
Nine times out of ten, the shoes you see in wedding pictures will be flat colours, usually white for the bride and black for the groom. You can add a little bit of flair and adventure to your outfit with some themed patterns, like the flowers or hearts patterns used on Irregular Choice shoes– or take it to an extreme and flip the whole outfit on its head by wearing shoes that fit your personality, rather than the situation!
You can have a lot of fun messing with the colours you use, too. If white’s too plain or dull, you could wear you and your partner’s favourite colours on each foot, or just try to coordinate with the decorations you’ve chosen.
Be a bit impulsive
When you’re trying to decide on what kind of shoe to wear, don’t restrict yourself to things you’re familiar with. There’s hundreds of unique shoe shapes and sizes that all have a slightly different feel to them, so you should give yourself a chance to experiment with something new!
