A new study by a money saving website based in the UK has found that over half of married Britons now regret how much they spent on their wedding day. Furthermore, it was found that brides believed floral arrangements and bouquets to be the most wasteful expense of the day, with grooms claiming that the cost of their brides wedding dress was the most over extravagant purchase.
Whilst the majority of married individuals will say that their wedding day was the best day of their lives; many Britons believe that the day was an unnecessarily expensive, with over half of married respondents in a new study regretting how much they spent on the day itself. The research revealed that the average couple spent £19,870 on the day, with more than a third saying this was the biggest expense of their life thus far.
The team at www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk conducted the research as part of an ongoing study into the spending of Britons, concentrating on weddings. For the purpose of the poll, 2,412 married Britons took part, each of whom had married their spouse within the last 5 years. A total of 1,192 participants were female and the remaining 1,220 were male. All participants taking part had their wedding in the United Kingdom.
Initially each participant was asked, ‘Approximately how much did your wedding cost?’ and from this, research calculated from each individual’s answer that the average emerged as £19,870.
Participants were then asked if they regretted the amount they spent overall on their wedding day and if there were ways they could’ve cut down on how expensive it was, to which 52% stated there was.
Next, all male participants were asked what part of their wedding they thought was the biggest waste of money, with the following 5 items emerging as the most common answers:
1. My wife’s wedding dress – 24%
2. Bridesmaid dresses – 21%
3. Floral arrangements/wedding bouquets – 16%
4. The suits – 10%
5. The reception venue – 7%
Following this, all brides were asked the same question, with their top 5 answers emerging as following:
Floral arrangements/wedding bouquets – 27%
Decorations – 21%
The suits – 18%
Food and drink – 11%
Car/transportation – 7%
When participants were asked if they had to borrow money from relative for their wedding, 69% said they had to do this, with the average amount being borrow emerging as £4,970.
George Charles, spokesperson for VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, said the following:
“Getting married is a huge financial commitment, and the sad fact is that the wedding day itself has now become less about the union of two people and more about the show you can put on and the amount of money you can spend. If you can afford to spend thousands on a day to celebrate the love between you and your partner then by all means you should go for it but if you can’t then maybe consider going for something cheaper. Your guests should not judge you just because you can’t afford to buy that £5,000 dress or castle venue!”
