New research has revealed that 1 in 7 British couples who are getting married this year have settled on an Ed Sheeran track for their first dance song; with John Legend and Adele the next most popular choices.

The theme, the first dance music and the venue are the hardest decisions to make when it comes to arranging a wedding, according to new research. Although British bride and grooms-to-be may struggle to decide on what artist will sing their first dance song, it appears that Ed Sheeran has topped the list for two years; 2016 and 2017.

The team at www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk conducted the research following a surge in Britons searching online for wedding discounts. 2,518 Britons aged 18 and over, all of whom stated that they were getting married this year, were quizzed about their wedding. wedding first dance

Initially all respondents were asked ‘Who did the majority of the wedding planning for your upcoming big day?’ to which the most common responses were ‘the bride-to-be’ (57%) ‘the wedding planner’ (20%) and ‘the mother/mother-in-law’ (18%). Just 2% said the groom-to-be.

All respondents were then asked ‘How much do you estimate that your wedding will cost in total?’ Once all answers were collated, it was revealed that the average UK wedding costs £23,495. Furthermore, when asked who paid for the majority of the wedding, the top responses were revealed as ‘me and/or my partner’ (43%), ‘the bride’s parents’ (26%) and ‘grandparent(s)' (14%).

When asked what the most difficult decision to make regarding the wedding was, the top responses were revealed as ‘the theme/colour scheme’ (24%), ‘the first dance music’ (22%) and ‘the venue’ (15%).

All respondents were asked to state which artist they had chosen for their first dance song. When provided with a list of possible artists and told to select the one that applied (or they could state their own), the top five responses were as follows:

Ed Sheeran - 14%ed sheeran

John Legend - 9%

Adele - 9%

Beyoncé - 7%

Michael Bublé - 6%

According to the poll, just 10% of respondents confessed that they were thinking of having a song that wasn’t released in the past five years as their first dance wedding song, with Whitney Houston topping the list.

VoucherCodesPro.co.uk carried out a similar poll last year, to find out which artists were the most commonly chosen for first dance songs at 2016 weddings. Ed Sheeran was also top of the list in 2016, with 11% dancing to a song by him.

George Charles, spokesperson for www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, made the following comments:

“It may sound trivial, but choosing your first dance music is a big decision. You’re going to enter married life dancing along to this song, your guests are going to want to dance along to this song, and you need to find one that you feel does justice in showcasing how much you both love each other.

“We could all guess that Ed Sheeran topped the list last year, but we’re all a little surprised he’s already topping the list again this year. He may have released a whole new album, but we haven’t become quite as obsessed with any of the songs just yet as we were with Thinking Out Loud. It'd be interesting to see if the songs of his that people pick for the first dances this year will be from his new ÷ album, or an older one.”
