For many people, the term “destination wedding” evokes the image of a wedding ceremony taking place on a beach, somewhere sunny. Beach weddings can be very lovely but they don’t suit everyone, so how about bringing a group of your nearest and dearest to an amazing city for a destination wedding?
Most airports in the UK now offer direct flights to New York, and it is an incredible city that truly has something for everyone – history, shopping, food, luxury, and the beautiful spaces of Central Park. Lots of Brits are flying over to New York to get married there. I plan weddings for couples who want to get married in New York’s Central Park. I got married there myself seven years ago, when I was living nearby, and I’ve helped almost 250 couples to get married there since.
We see either couples eloping alone to New York get married, or bringing a fairly large group of up to fifty guests, but most weddings we see in Central Park tend to be a smaller group of family and close friends of maybe five to fifteen people.
If you have ever looked in to getting married abroad you might think that it can get a bit complicated. But, did you know that a wedding in the USA will be legally binding for British couples who live in the UK? So, unlike marrying in most of the beach locations in other countries, there would be no need for marrying in a register office at home for the legal side of things, just one wedding (and one anniversary) each year!
To get married in New York, all you need to do is go to City Hall in person, together, with your passports and a credit card to pay $35 with and pick up a license. Then you wait at least 24 hours and after that you can get married! There are no rules about being in a permanent structure to say your vows, as there are in England, you can get married pretty much anywhere in the US.
My job as a wedding planner with Wed in Central Park is to guide couples through all of the decisions needed to decide how to have the wedding of their dreams in this beautiful, iconic, world-famous oasis of calm in the centre of one of the world’s greatest and busiest cities. I book the officiant who doe the ceremony, the photographer, video, flowers, music and anything else the couples need. The couple are legally obliged to take care of picking up their license and we do the rest – and we keep the license after the ceremony and get their marriage registered. After a wedding ceremony in the stunningly beautiful Central Park, with the iconic backdrop of the skyscrapers behind the tress, couples can go all over the city taking photos – the Top of the Rock, Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, Grand Central – there are so many places that will truly make your wedding photos unique. And then after that; a reception and celebration in one of New York’s incredible restaurants!
