An engagement party is the perfect place for family and friends on each side of the aisle to meet each other. Planning an engagement party can be a fun yet stressful task, but should be enjoyable nonetheless. Here expert wedding planner at Scarlet Events, Marc Ahmed, are five dos and don’ts of planning your engagement party.

Do: Choose a versatile colour scheme

Decorating your venue for your engagement party is incredibly important, but the venue shouldn’t look overdone or tacky. Make sure you choose a colour scheme that suits many things. A single colour means that you can add smaller darker colours, and the dress code will also suit the room. Candles, flowers and twinkling lights are a perfect way to decorate the venue for your engagement party.

Don’t: Have a seating arrangement

If you assign seats and have a big long tables that will hold large groups of people, your guests are more than likely to stick with who they know. Aside from celebrating your engagement, the main aim of an engagement party is for families to get to know each other, so go for smaller tables without a seating arrangement. It will also feel much less like a wedding.

Do: Choose the right music for the occasion

If you’re trying to bring a large group of people together, then you’ll need good music in the background to fill what may potentially be an awkward silence. A playlist of mellow music means that people can talk over it and get to know each other, and a playlist of quiet but classic songs can bring people together. Avoid loud obnoxious music that people will have to shout over.cheers

Don’t: Forget about allergies

If you’re serving food, then do not forget to make sure you are catering to those with dietary requirements. If you are providing a buffet that you have made, then put allergen cards with the dishes - you don’t want your engagement party to be associated with someone suffocating from a peanut allergy. There are also more vegetarians, vegans, lactose intolerant and gluten intolerant than ever before, so make sure the menu at your engagement party specifies what they can and cannot eat!

Do: Make sure you have enough booze

This is probably the most important of all do’s and dont’s. If you are providing an open bar then make sure there is a limit on the tab so that you do not end up paying thousands. That being said, if you are providing the alcohol at your engagement party then you should make sure there’s enough to go around. Champagne and prosecco are good go tos as the bubbles make them difficult to down, and they can be sipped slowly.
