With the first day of spring just around the corner, wedding guests are starting to worry about what to wear this season. Michael Barker is Chief Brand Officer at Garment Quarter, expert in the British designer fashion industry, and he has put together this spring wedding guest guide for optimum style.
There are plenty of reasons why people choose to have a spring wedding. Most importantly, there's the potential that blossom-filled trees and the first few sunny days of the year will provide the perfect backdrop for a stylish gathering.
After all the heavy fabrics and muted tones of winter, spring is quite literally a breath of fresh air for your wardrobe and as such can be one of the best seasons for wedding guest style.

Be prepared
While fantasy spring weddings are a warm, floral affair, the reality is that spring is an unpredictable season. March winds and April showers with spontaneous bouts of sunshine can make a nightmare of deciding what to wear as a spring wedding guest but, by focusing on layers, you can adjust to the changeable weather of the day. Combat a crisp, frosty morning with a silk scarf and a smart jacket, both of which can be removed and popped into a handbag if the sun does manage to peep through.
Luckily, 70s-style dresses are a big hit again this year. Think long maxi dresses and flowy fabrics that look good under a cropped jacket — plus, you can get away with an extra layer of tights underneath for added warmth!
Be a good guest
We've all heard horror stories of spring wedding guests daring to wear the colour of the bride — frankly, it's disrespectful and should be avoided at all costs unless otherwise explicitly stated. Steer clear of ivory, cream and light beige too, just in case. If you're stumped for what colour to wear, try 2019's hottest trend: distinctly feminine pink, perfect for spring.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, LBDs should also be avoided. You're at a wedding, not a funeral. Yes, you want to look good, and nothing makes you feel more confident than your trusty old reliable, but in wedding photos that the bride will cherish forever you have the potential to stick out like a sore thumb. If spring florals and pastels really aren't your thing, consider flattering royal blues or dusky greys instead.
Be yourself
Being a practical and respectful spring wedding guest doesn't mean you have to be standard issue. The bride and groom invited you to celebrate their big day with them for a reason – they love you. Get creative with separates like midi skirts, tailored trousers and blouses for more personalised looks or go bold with a trendy jumpsuit.
With a little foresight, spring weddings can be among the best to attend. It's important to be prepared for unpredictable weather and be respectful without sacrificing your own personality. If you take these tips on board, then your spring guest wedding style is sure to be on point.
