What better way to add some romance to your wedding day than with some fairytale lighting. From candles and lanterns to twinkling fairy lights and festoon lighting, the options are endless, but how you add and style them is the key to creating a fairytale look.

Wedding stylist, Lindsey Hunter at Get Knotted shares 8 fairytale lighting ideas to add softness, romance and interest to your day.

Fairytale lightingSuspended lighting – create a beautiful twinkling look by hanging lighting from the ceiling. Use lighting to suit your styling such as fairy lights cascading over the whole ceiling area, attach lots of glass baubles with tea lights inside to beams, festival inspired festoon lights in drapes across the room or hang lanterns of various sizes directly above your reception tables.

Ceremony aisle – your aisle is where you will walk to greet your fiancé before you say “I do” and walk away as a newly married couple for the first time, so make it romantic. Add lots of candles in lanterns, twiglight units or for a more contemporary look, funky LED lights will add a sense of drama. Keep the rest of the lighting at your ceremony low to ensure all of your guests focus on you.

Fairytale lightingMix and match – creating a mix and match look is a popular trend at present. Hang an eclectic variation of candleholders from beams to add a soft glow. Mix and match colourful hanging paper lanterns with large candlesticks and candelabras for a unique look.

Fairy lights – perfect for using anywhere at your wedding venue, fairy lights are small and versatile. Place some fairy lights outside your venue in trees and hang from a walkway canopy to lead guests to your reception. Continue the romantic ambiance inside by wrapping fairy lights around posts or small trees to create a feature inside your venue or as centrepieces on your reception tables.

Welcome areas – welcome/registration areas are usually the first glimpse into what is to come for your guests. Make them really warm and receiving by placing candles or lanterns on and in wooden crates. Make some informal designs using the crates to suit the rest of your styling, which will keep guests wondering about what else is to come.

Wedding lightingUplighting – use uplighting on walls in darker areas at your venue to add some warmth and a soft glow. A great way of enhancing larger areas with uplighting is to place large pedestals with floral designs underneath your uplights, which will add a pretty glow to your flowers, bringing out the colours and sensory aspect of your floral styling.

Focal lighting – create a focal feature using lighting by hiring some unusual chandeliers. Fairy tales often feature rustic chandeliers, so use these to your advantage by adding flowers and foliage such as roses and wondering ivy to complement your table décor for a beautiful fairy tale look.

Create height and definition – use an array of individual candlesticks of various heights and sizes on your reception tables to create height and definition. Place them on and in different objects such as pots and vases, log slices, wooden crates, candelabra’s and terrariums.

Tip – turn down your venue lighting and let your fairytale lighting cast its magical spell for a beautifully styled wedding.
